Adult anterior open\-bite guide

# Does an open bite mean jaw surgery?

Jaw surgery can be part of care when an assessed jaw\-position problem cannot be corrected by orthodontics alone\. An open\-bite label does not decide that need: the tooth and jaw targets in your individual assessment matter\.

General adult education with clearly labelled fictional explanations\. Your treating clinicians explain your individual findings and care\.

## Surgery has a particular job, not an automatic place in every plan

A jaw operation changes a jaw relationship\. Orthodontic work changes tooth positions and can also have a connected role in a combined plan\. If a clinician identifies a jaw\-position problem that orthodontics alone cannot correct, a surgical discussion can explain that different contribution\.

The useful starting point is therefore the assessed problem and the intended change, rather than choosing between the words aligners and surgery\. An adult with an open\-bite finding needs an explanation of what the proposed work is meant to address\.

This guide focuses on an anterior open bite in adults\. It supplies completed fictional explanations so you can follow the reasoning in a proposal without having to diagnose your own bite\.

## What does anterior open bite describe?

Anterior means the front\. The AAO describes an anterior open bite as a relationship in which the back teeth are together but the upper and lower front teeth do not overlap\. That describes how the teeth meet; it does not, by itself, explain the individual's tooth positions, jaw contribution or appropriate treatment\.

A posterior open bite describes a different contact relationship at the back\. A child's developing bite and habit history also have their own assessment\. The lessons here keep the adult front\-tooth question in focus\.

The existing [BiteGuide contact drawings](<https://orthodonticbitebroward.com/how-upper-and-lower-teeth-meet>) make the spatial language easier to follow\. A drawing is an orientation aid, not a personal finding\.

## One label can lead to different explanations

In the examples ahead, Leah receives an explanation of a proposed tooth\-position and front\-contact goal\. Noah receives an explanation of a jaw\-relationship goal with connected tooth work\. Their professionals have already assessed the different targets; readers are not asked to select a case from a photograph or a gap measurement\.

The payoff is practical: you can recognize what the proposal is trying to change, understand why each job is there and keep progress separate from a promised result\.

## A clear goal, with a doctor responsible for the review

At SMILE\-FX®, board\-certified orthodontists see every patient, including at follow\-up visits\. Digital planning and smile\-preview simulations give the proposed change a concrete place in the conversation\. A preview supports discussion; it is not a result promised in advance\.

Standard smartphone monitoring and a route to provider support keep continuing questions connected to the clinical team\. Your actual appliance, review needs and in\-person care are set individually\. Read the [complete care model](</about-this-guide#care-model-about>) , then use the optional in\-person request if you want to discuss your own orthodontic goal\.
